![]() ![]() "Hotel Transylvania" and its sequel are films made specifically for children with nearly nothing included for adults. I've become accustomed to animated films working on two levels where there are tidbits included for adults along with the traditional jokes and antics that are aimed to entertain children. About the best compliment I can come up with is that the film is cute and when Adam Sandler (he co-wrote the screenplay) isn't getting in the way, it's easy to watch. Beyond that insight there isn't much in the film that will reach to anyone older than 8 or 9. I particularly liked how Dennis' perception of monsters was more defined by a television program he was too comfortable in his surroundings to accept that his grandfather, mother and his favorite playmate were actually monsters. Inserting a child into a hotel predominantly for monsters provides for some unexpected comedy. It does, however, benefit from the addition of Dennis, Dracula's grandson. In fact, it serves pretty much the same purpose of the first film, as it presents the exact same message of looking past a person's outward appearance. "Hotel Transylvania 2" isn't all that different from its predecessor. Still, it did at least have a message about being accepting of one another and, more importantly to Sony Pictures, was a financial success. Review: I wasn't particularly enamored with "Hotel Transylvania" because it felt like a monster movie made by people who didn't really care for monster movies. Convinced his daughter, Mavis, will move away to live with her human in-laws, Dracula enlists the help of his friends to bring out the monster in the child. Synopsis: Dracula's grandson is nearing this fifth birthday and shows no signs of being a vampire. As always, all my opinions are my own and not swayed by outside sources.SALT LAKE CITY (KUTV) - "Hotel Transylvania 2" 3 out of 5 Stars Director: Genndy Tartakovsky Starring: Adam Sandler, Andy Samberg, Selena Gomez Genre: Animation, Family, Comedy Rated: PG for some scary images, action and rude humor Recommended to: Those looking for a fairly generic monster mashup aimed at appeasing children.
